"It’s Rough Out Here"
From the collection: VHS Dreams & Paint Brush Scenes
This piece is one of my personal favorites—a tribute to a film that defined a generation and continues to echo through our culture. Boyz n the Hood wasn’t just a movie. It was a statement. A mirror. A wake-up call. Even now, decades later, we still quote it, reference it, and feel it in our bones.
Directed by the legendary John Singleton, this film marked the debut of Ice Cube and introduced the world to the raw truth of South Central L.A. It was fearless in its storytelling, powerful in its impact, and unforgettable in its authenticity. Singleton didn’t just direct a film—he gave us a lens into our own lives.
What I loved most while creating this piece was bringing the era to life—especially through the car and the clothes. The 1960 Chevy pulses with character, while the fashion captures the soul of the 90s: oversized fits, bold patterns, a style that spoke without saying a word. Every detail felt like resurrecting a memory.
This work is both homage and reflection—honoring a film that shaped the culture and reminding us how art can shift the way we see the world around us.
