"The Matriarchs"

A tribute to my mother and her sisters

This piece is my love letter to the women who raised me. My mother and her three sisters were the foundation of every celebration, every lesson, every moment of comfort and strength in my childhood. Four Haitian women—resilient, loyal, powerful—who stood as one. I grew up in a matriarchal home where my mother was the compass. She made the calls, set the tone, and held the family together like gravity.

In this painting, the woman in the white turban represents my mother. She was the first to earn her wings, the first to transition into the next realm. The white symbolizes her purity, her spiritual grace, and her closeness to God. I placed her closest to the sun—our eternal source of light—because that’s how I see her now: forever near the divine, watching over us with warmth and love.

What I cherish most about this piece is its simplicity in color. The palette is restrained, yet bold—each hue chosen with intention. The few colors used don’t compete; instead, they command presence. Like the women it honors, this painting is both strong and elegant, quiet yet unshakable.

This is more than a work of art—it’s a remembrance, a celebration, and a thank you to the women who shaped me.
