"Smart Looked Good on Us"

In memory of my sister

This piece is deeply personal. It’s a tribute to my sister, who loved A Different World with her whole heart. We used to watch it together, surrounded by laughter and love—those evenings now live in my memory like warm Polaroids from a better time. Creating this piece was a way to reconnect with her spirit and the joy we shared.

I chose to paint Dwayne Wayne because he embodied something rare—intelligence with swagger, a quiet confidence that made being smart look undeniably cool. He was a cultural symbol that said you didn’t have to choose between being brilliant and being yourself.

What I love most about this painting—aside from his signature flip-up glasses—is the sweater. The detail, the texture, the bold patterning—it mirrors the uniqueness of both the character and the show itself. Every stitch painted felt like stitching a memory back together.

This piece is more than nostalgia—it’s a love letter to Black excellence, to family, and to the kinds of shows that made us feel seen, smart, and proud.
