"Rainy Sabbaths & Reasoning"

A tribute to my sister, and to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill*

This piece holds one of the dearest memories I have with my sister. I remember the day The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was released—we walked to the music store together, bought the album, grabbed Subway, and made our way back home. What followed was a perfect Saturday: music, conversation, scripture, and a sisterhood that felt sacred.

We listened to the album from beginning to end, pausing between songs to unpack lyrics, trade thoughts, and reflect on life. Then, as if the universe was blessing the moment, it started to rain. We turned down the volume and opened the Word, letting Lauryn’s lyrics and scripture intertwine in what became one of our most beautiful reasoning sessions.

This piece is a tribute to that memory—quiet, powerful, and intimate. Artistically, I love the absence of heavy lines. Her face is suggested rather than defined, inviting the viewer to participate in the image. It's a visual metaphor for memory: not always clear, but deeply felt. Your eyes fill in the blanks just like the heart fills in the spaces left by those we’ve lost.

This artwork lives at the intersection of music, spirit, and sisterhood—and for me, it’s one of the most meaningful stories I’ve ever had the honor of painting.
