"Ain’t No Party Like..."

From the collection: VHS Dreams & Paint Brush Scenes

This piece is more than a tribute—it’s a mirror. House Party wasn’t just one of my favorite movies growing up—it shaped me. I must’ve watched it a thousand times, memorizing every moment, every dance move, every beat. So when I got to college at 17 and threw my very first party, I didn’t even realize I was stepping straight into the legacy of the film that raised me.

What started as fun became my hustle. I threw parties all throughout college—not always glamorous, but it paid the bills and gave me a purpose. It wasn’t until years later, watching House Party as an adult, that I saw just how much I had internalized. I wasn’t just a fan—I was living out the story.

What I love most about this piece is its sense of depth. The composition is layered, just like the memories it holds. There’s a large central figure anchoring the scene, while smaller characters move in the foreground, and distant figures bring the background to life. It’s visually alive—with vibrant color combinations that make each layer pop and play off one another.

This work captures more than just a film—it’s a celebration of youth, identity, and the ways pop culture can quietly guide our lives until we look back and realize… we were living the movie all along.
